Cutting Tool Positioners – Automotive Engine Block Machining Transfer Line
These linear actuator/electric cylinders are used extensively in Honda's V-6 engine plant. This unique four piston rod linear actuator/electric cylinder is one of E•DRIVE’s original patents for metal working equipment. This enables allows us to use enhanced bearing support on each end of the ball screw, which allows increased speed and also increases the system stiffness, which is very important in this application where size and repeatability under varying load conditions is essential. In this application, we are replacing hydraulics formerly used to position the cutting tools on the main transfer machining stations. Components being machined include a V-6 engine block as well as the cylinder heads. Our selection for this application was based on our proven ability to consistently achieve tight position accuracy along with very high reliability.

Machine Tool – Mold Manufacturing
E•DRIVE linear actuator/electric cylinders are well suited to Hexabot structures, due to their mechanical stiffness and high positioning accuracy. E•DRIVE provides linear positioning equipment with linear actuator/electric cylinders used in a machine tool application for specialty production of mold dies. In these unique machines, the work piece table has six legs, each of which is a linear actuator/electric cylinder. The table moves through a combination of simultaneous motions of all six linear actuator/electric cylinders, allowing “roll”, “pitch”, and “yaw” in addition to conventional “X”, “Y”, and “Z” motions. This linear positioning equipment is able to achieve positional accuracy within one thousandth of an inch within 1 cubic foot working envelope and address the lower volume builders of plastic injection molds. A typical example would be to machine the molds for running shoes which have few, if any, straight lines. In this “new age” there are advantages to being able to twist and turn and machine “draft” into a mold without special tools, and with improved surface finishes. This is only possible with the high accuracy and structural rigidity offered by our unique construction.
